TCM training: pictures of TCM pulse diagnosis 1, superficial pulse (fumai), scattered pulse (sanmai), hollow pulse (koumai), tympanic pulse (gemai)
1. Superficial pulse (Fu Mai):
It can be easily felt with gentle touch. Its strength is slightly reduced but not hollow on a little heavy press. It indicates exterior and deficiency syndromes. Because the pathogenic factor locates at the superficial part of the body and the defensive qi resists the pathogenic factor in the superficial part of the body. In a prolonged disease, if the pulse is superficial, it is always forceless.
(Elucidation: in the following picture, the uper part means superficial ; the middle part means moderate; the lower part means sunken)

2. Scattered pulse (San Mai):
It is diffusing and feeble with less beats on light touch and faint on hard press. It indicates exhaustion of yuan-primary qi and failure of functions of zangfu organs.

3. Hollow pulse (Kou Mai):
It is felt floating, large, soft, and hollow, like a scallion stalk. It indicates severe loss of blood and collapse of yin. Because the volume of blood is suddenly reduced in the severe loss of blood, the body fluid is greatly damaged and yin collapsed with the blood loss, so yang loses its dependence, floating outside.

4. Tympanic pulse (Ge Mai):
It is felt extremely taut and hollow, giving the feeling as if touching the surface of a drum. It indicates severe loss of blood, spermatorrhea, abortion and metrostaxis. Because the anti-pathogenic qi is very weak and essence and blood are not stored well, so qi loses its dependence, floating outside.
