赤芍药 Chishaoyao
Radix Paeoniae Rubra

【Source】
  Source is from root of Paeonia lactiflora Pall, or several other species of the same genus, family Ranunculaceae.


【Properties】
  Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature, attributive to liver meridians.


【Actions】
  Clear away heat, cool blood, remove blood stasis, relieve pain.


【Application】
 1. Chishaoyao is used for febrile diseases involving yingfen and xuefen with fever which is severe at night, purplish dark eruptions and macules, crimson tongue, blood-heat syndrome with haematemesis or epistaxis. 
                   2. For blood stasis syndrome manifested as amenorrhea, dysmenorrheal, abdominal masses and trauma, especially for heat stagnation and blood stasis, or abdominal pain due to stagnation of blood. 
                    3. For liver-heat with red, swollen and painful eyes.
