Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) VS Gegen (Radix Puerariae) VS Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae)
Common points :
They can all expel pathogenic factors from the superficies and invigorate the spleen-yang, all are used for the disease due to exogenous pathogenic wind and heat with fever and headache.
Differences:
1. Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) and Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) can invigorate the spleen-yang in sending qi, nutrients upward , are used for prolapse due to qi deficiency marked by prolapse of the rectum due to chronic diarrhea and prolapse of internal organs.
2. Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) and Gegen (Radix Puerariae) can let out eruption of measles, they are used for early stage of measles marked by unsmooth eruption.
3. Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) can mediate Shaoyang meridian, soothe the liver and remove the stagnancy of liver-qi, so Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) is oftern used for syndrome of the shaoyang meridians marked by alternate spells of fever and chills, fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, bitter taste in the mouth, dryness of throat, also for stagnancy of liver-qi with irregular menstruation, pain in the chest and hypochondrium, abating fever.
4. Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) can clear away heat and relieve toxic materials, it is used for heat syndromes marked by toothache, aphthae, sore and swollen throat and erysipelas.
5. Gegen (Radix Puerariae) can raise lucid yang, produce body fluid, relieve thirst, diarrhea and dysentery, so it is used for treating febrile disease with excessive thirst, diabetes due to yin deficiency, diarrhea and dysentery due to heat, diarrhea due to spleen-deficiency. Gegen (Radix Puerariae) can expel pathogenic factors in the muscles and relieve fever, so it is used for exterior syndrome manifested as stiffness, pain of the nape and back.
